Creative Space

After my shoppo experience this week, and because certain other people, like Gina and Tif, get me thinking about consumerism, exploitation, and sustainability, I am going to have a go at making my own clothes.

I bought this book a while ago now (you can check it out over at my side bar), and got a bit lost in all the measurements and wanting to start with making the complicated stuff first...

So today I am looking at the "basic A line skirt" (the simplest pattern thank you) and thinking about making one out of the linen in the background.

Now you observant types will immediately recognise this fabric from my lounge room drum shades.  Do I really want to look like my light shades?  Is this a little Sound of Music lets make the kids clothes from the curtains kind of thing?

Any ways, you got to agree this is one cute skirt.  I am thinking I might go grey linen pockets, with a bit of free motion embroidery. What do you think?

More spaces over at Kootoyoo, I love hanging out with such wonderful, creative women every Thursday.  Go have a look and get inspired!

  2. What a great looking book! I have to say I would never get any sewing done for me if I had to take measurements and Faff around! The skirt looks like it's going to be fab with embroidery etc. I did giggle at your sound of music comment.

  3. Very cute skirt! I love a bit of SoM sewing myself... I have dresses made from quilt covers and pillowslips - great for hiding from the kids and having a nap at the same time!! ;) K

  6. It does sound a little bit like 'the sound of music', but that's what makes it so fun. Use what you have to make something you need. Happy Creative Thursday!

Oh, and I hear coordinating with your light fixtures is the new black, so go for it! ;)

  9. Very nice skirt! Just remember the simplest is often the best. The fabric is beautiful and I think it would look great with grey pockets. Looking forward to seeing the finished skirt!

  12. Love this post.
You so have to do it.
Matching your furnishings is so next year. A few months ago I made a dressing gown from a bedspread and made some cushions with the leftovers. Brings a smile to my face everytime I sit next to them. Still in love with those lampshades!

  15. Er, slightly embarassed to read my name and Tif's in same sentence. She's sooo cool!
Yay for skirtage!! I love the fabric and a skirt will be perfect. Just watch out for the straight lines, it could be an issue cutting a-line panels out of the birch with its straight lined trees... As in the front and back might look funny where they meet up- not a problem if you're using plain fabric for the bulk of it and just making a feature panel with the birch though.
