Surrounded by lush indoor foliage, some black and white and a dash of blue or yellow, it looks so tropical.

I have had the good fortune of scoring a few cane pieces from op shops, so I thought I would share with you the process I took to redo a little side table.

Here's the before:

I gave it a good clean up, using a brush to get all the dust off and then gave it a good clean in with some sugar soap. Because the cane was lacquered and I had zero desire to sand it, I prepped with my old friend Zinsser. Apparently you can get Zinsser primer in a spray can, but I have yet to find it at the hardware store. I used a soft, round furniture painting brush to apply a light coat all over. Fiddly.

I purchased 3 cans of White Knight Quick Dry Satin Enamel in, well, White. I was a little worried because we know that there are whites and there are whites, you know. Happy to say this is a nice, fresh, soft white and the Satin was the perfect low sheen cover that I was looking for.

Spray painting is not the most efficient use of paint. I only just had enough. Make sure you are outside when spraying, this stuff stinks. There are many things in life I don't understand. The desire to sniff paint is one of them...

I grabbed a few big boxes from the pile at Bunnings and used this to surround the table and minimise painting my lawn. Contrary to poplular opinion, I do not paint EVERYTHING white.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bountifully/8591273251/" title="Will take a pic styled inside next week, but couldn't wait to show her off. Very happy with the result.
Two coats, an hour apart and it was done. I left it for 24 hrs to fully harden before bringing it upstairs to find it a home/styling it/spill my coffee on it.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bountifully/8591313347/" title="Here she is in her new home. I am loving the white. Always a good choice I think.
I have another table in the pipe line and am currently stalking a few on Ebay. Next project to tackle is a big old dark brown bookcase that I am sure really, really wants to be white too. For that one I am going to overcome my fear of power tools and use my dad's spray paint compressor thingy...yes, I know all the right words.
I posted these on instagram yesterday, with the suggestion that apple puree is great to decrease the oil and sugar content of muffins, for lunch box friendly kiddy treats (not to mention handy to have with a cuppa yourself kind of treats). A few people asks for the recipe, so here it is:

In a bowl mix one cup apple puree (I just buy it from Aldi ready done, because I am time poor, but feel free to make your own), one egg and 1/4 cup vegetable oil (I use rice bran oil). Mix him all together.

Then toss in 1.5 cups plain flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/2 cup of sugar, 4 tbs cocoa powder (I use dutched), 1 tsp Cinnamon powder and a splash of vanilla extract.

Mix them all together until just combined, then pour into muffin cases and bake in a moderate oven for 15-20 min until set. They are dead set awful if over cooked, so keep an eye on them.

I did not make this apple cake today - I made it yesterday in a hurry when I realised I had not thought to make a dessert for the guests coming for lunch. Lunch without dessert is of course perfectly acceptable, but being the crazy rain and wind kind of day we had in Brisbane yesterday, I thought we could do with a bit of comfort food.

Today I am baking Nigella's sour cream Chocolate Cake. It is no longer raining, but it is still gloomy so further comfort baking was deemed necessary.

Yesterdays apple cake was such a success, I thought I would share it with you. I am happy to report there was not a crumb left after lunch to photograph.

A Little Apple Cake

4 large green apples, skin on and thinly sliced (I use a mandolin)
2 eggs
1/2 cup double thick cream (I am thinking of using creme fraiche next time)
1 cup plain flour
1 cup caster sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon powder

preheat your oven to 180 degrees. Layer the apple slices in a 25 cm springform round tin that is well buttered. Mix all the remaining ingredients together (I popped mine in the blender) and whiz to combine. Pour the batter over the apples, mushing it down a bit so it seeps through the apple layers. Bake for about 40 min. It will be golden on top and come away from the edges a little when done.

I served mine with the remaining double thick cream, but ice cream would also be perfect. This is the kind of cake which is awesome with a nice cup of tea.
I have kinda lost my blogging way, you know? I am finding it way more fun over at Instagram, but I miss the writing and the musing.

I think it got too hard when blogging went a bit pro. I have a day job I am pretty good at, I don't really want to make money from my blog. I have no problems with those who do, don't get me wrong. But it is pretty competitive out there. I ask you, is there a place for a personal blog anymore? One that more people than my mum and my bestie read? Your thoughts people, I really want to know!

In the meantime, here are some of my fave instagram snaps, because you know I can't write a post without some pictures...

Dinosaur Dig cake. Great idea from the Mr. Inside this explosive little cake I buried some plastic dino bones (after cooking of course).

Never one to reinvent the wheel, I used many of the ideas from this lady (who was kind enough to email me a copy of her science experiment booklet)
The Mr and I were keen to make a nativity scene this year, so we trolled through Pinterest looking for ideas. The Mr is onto Pinterest now. I don't think this is quite what he had in mind, but I loved the simple, clean lines of the original and thought I would make it a bit Scandi with the white wash stable walls. Plus, the doctor in me fell in love with the idea of using tongue depressors.

Idea from here.

p.s. if you ask your doctor really nicely they may give you some tongue depressors. If not, of course you can use popsicle sticks.

p.s.s. I think I am going to make one to take to work to hang on my surgery wall!
The idea is that you get yourself some cute little jars and make up 3-4 days worth of salads in advance, ready to grab on you way out to work in the morning, or to spare you from eating the crusts off your kids sandwiches for lunch (or was that just me when mine were small?).

<img alt="Jar salads!
You pop the dressing and heavy stuff down the bottom and layer up as you go. These ones have left over ground beef with kidney beans, but you can use pretty much anything there. Some of my faves:

poached chicken and fetta

roasted sweet potato and haloumi cheese

tuna slices, a hard boiled egg and blanched green beans

I often toss in some Chia seeds or Sunflower seeds at the end. For a dressing I use a mix of sherry vinegar and extra virgin olive oil.

No excuses now for not getting your fill of veggies!

Great to be back in this little space, by the way. I have been kinda distracted by, well, living this fun filled busy little old life of mine. And also by Pinterest, and Instagram... follow these linkies to find me (my linkies up the top are giving me grief).

I might just get good at this.

I wore this out to my birthday lunch with my Bestie. The dress I bought recently while holidaying at Byron Bay. It is a Mimosa silk number, purchased on sale for the most reasonable sum of $45. You see, another sneaky way to take home holiday souvenirs.

She is an ace girl my bestie, just look how she wrapped my pressie! This is schmick of her because she doesn't sew (but she so totally could you know).

I am always on the lookout for something a bit different to bring home from our holidays as a souvenir. This vintage poster purchased while visiting Mt Cook in New Zealand on our summer holiday last year was one such something. It just took me awhile to get around to framing it.

While we are looking at pictures, here is my (partially) completed picture wall that I started blogging about way back here. The fames are all opted and some painted white. I love the mix of black, white and sliver.
When I turned 9 I got a cassette player. She got an ipod touch.

We had a party with 10 of her Moshi Monster-crazy friends. I wanted to make it all look pretty and so she humoured me - The Girl is good like that.

The cake pre Moshi take over

And after the Moshi invasion

Whipped cream and as many lollies as one could fit on a cupcake.

More prettiness. I made these following Martha's instructions. The Girl said they looked like Iggy.

We played this game, which kept everyone busy. I like busy, busy is good at a kids party.

The Boy got the mummy treatment on the boy's team. They picked him as he was smaller to wrap...

Do you remember playing this game as a child? We called it the Oddie Donut Munch.

The cake inside. Hard to take good shots with 10 kids elbowing behind you. You get the idea. I like ombre, the girl was ambivalent, but humoured me anyway.

Charlie and Lola our cavoodles. Out in the cold...

What luck to find a shop made pinata that looked a bit like Angel!

A few days will be taken up with the school vacation care program (I still have to work my two days) but for the rest I am looking forward to having them around. I like my kids. They are all sorts of fun.

Today we:
Went to the gym. The kids spent an hour in the play centre, catching up with the gyms kiddy carer, Taz, who they have missed since last hols. I sweated it out in my ABT class
Had coffee together at the gym cafe. I love my local gym, it is small, family run and has a great little espresso bar attached, run by my friend Bree. That girl makes a great coffee, a hidden gem in our little part of suburbia.
Off to the oppie, not to shop, but to unload a boot full of stuff from our last clean out. Well, they do love helping...
Grocery shop. The Boy got to practice counting and reading skills to help choose the fruit and veg (6 nice brown mushrooms mum?). We decided to make mini hot dogs for lunch when we spied a nice looking tube of mustard.
$1 Tuesday and the DVD shop. One DVD each. Diego and Barney. I love how they go for the little kid stuff, even though they are big kids now.
Home for hot dogs. We heated some mini bake at home bread rolls in the oven, then sliced them open and popped in the little frankfurters, tomato sauce and of course the fancy mustard.
Pizza dough mixing and kneading, ready for dins tonight. Corned Beef on to simmer, rhubarb on to stew.
Salt dough mixing, sculpting and some rainbow crayon drawing.
My am I exhausted! Good thing we rented those DVDs....

How do you spend your school vacation with your kids?

Bought jeans for $10 at Kmart after reading this. They are too long and scratchy, but fit nicely where it counts. I am hoping a few washes smooths them out.

Took hem up on too long jeans. I once paid $10 extra at a tailor to have a pair of jeans taken up retaining the original hem. Yesterday on pinterest I find out it is actually easier to take them up like this. Clear as day how to over here.

Bought a pair of clogs on sale.

A bit of baking.

A few fury helpers, to keep me company now the smalls are both at school.

How are things with you?Tracey@bountifullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977553433046874229noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670935223124823098.post-55361167532820390802012-03-11T20:11:00.001+10:002012-03-11T20:11:41.491+10:00Metalicus Inspired Long Tank DressI am thinking old girls like me should not hunch over the floor cutting and pinning and shaping all day. I had fun and in one day I actually made something, however a few days on I am paying for it with a day in bed with back pain.

To the dress, which is more interesting than listening to me whinge about my back. Apologies for the phone photo. Yes, that is a lot of doctors room type stuff, pap smear stuff to be specific, for I had no time to take the picture before I left for work.

I found this mustard-y-yellow stretchy gauze type fabric on the sale rack at Spottie last week. For $5 a meter I grabbed a few meters, thinking it would make a great long tank dress.

The details: I used a firm fitting long tank I already owned to cut out a pattern. I traced straight onto the fabric,on the folding, using the first piece as my pattern. My tank only goes mid thigh, so I made a gentle, slight A line down to floor length. The fabric was very thin, so I cut out 4 pieces, sewing 2 dresses, so to speak, then attaching them together around the neck line, in the same way you would line a bag. I then top stitched the neckline layers so they would sit well

I then had no idea how to hem around the arm holes, so I simply zig zagged the layers together then made a long strip of ruffles sewing them over the raw edges. I left the bottom un-hemmed, though adding another ruffle did occur to me.

All up I am pretty chuffed with the result. Here I am wearing the dress with a low belt. I also had on a pale blue and white stripped jacket that day and nude heels. Later in the week I wore it with a bright blue belt on the waist and blue ballet flats for a more casual look. I am thinking in winter it would look great with my black jacket and boots, or perhaps a grey waterfall cardigan.

When I showed the dress off to Bungalow Girl, she mentioned she was nervous about sewing with knits. Do not be nervous people, just go slow and use a narrow zig zag stitch. Though next time I am going to have a go with a double needle, if i can find one to fit old Hilda.
